1. Too much gloss.
Stick with ‘less is best.’
Lip gloss is typically for a younger woman and if overdone will look unflattering on older lips. And we have all seen overdone lips!
To avoid looking too glossy, try applying your gloss to just the centres of your mouth. To create a more subtle shine, try a shiny balm or a lipstick gloss pencil. You will find a number of options in the market that offer a selection of colours and the perfect amount of not-too-glossy shine. M.A.C, Sephora, Mecca - NARS Velvet Gloss Jumbo Lip Pencil!
2. Visible lip liner. YUK, YUK and YUK!
It draws the eyes straight to the lips!
Stick with a lip liner that matches your natural lip colour no matter what shade of lip colour you want to wear. Only apply to the part of the lips that need definition. We want to create a more natural look with a pop of colour rather than your lips looking like they have been outlined.
3. Lipstick on your teeth.
If you see a sister with lipstick on her teeth, help her out and tell her!
Once you have applied your lipstick, a simple trick here is to put your finger in your mouth and take it out to remove any excess lipstick that could find its way to your teeth.
4. Applying lipstick on chapped or dry lips.
This is NOT a good look - some URGENT maintenance is required here!
Avoid the flaky lip look. If your lips are dry look after them. Exfoliate or use a coloured healing lip balm instead of lipstick (Burt Bees has a full range of colours to choose from)
5. Lip liner or lipstick past your natural edges.
No no no!
Some call it plumping your lips by applying liner of lipstick past your natural lip edges – it’s an illusion, and it never looks good!
Simply use a light nude shimmery gloss on the centre of your lips. This will add to the illusion of volume naturally.
Happy shopping!
